Eshowe, 24 May 2024 - The Mayor of King Cetshwayo District Municipality, Cllr AT Ntuli, delivered the highly anticipated State of the District Address (SODA) at Eshowe Sports Club. During his speech, he highlighted the significant achievements and ongoing challenges faced by the municipality.

Support for Local Cooperatives and Businesses

Mayor Ntuli proudly announced the municipality's support for the iVutshane cooperative. In March last year, the district provided the co-op with 10 goats, which have since grown to 18 goats by 2024. This initiative aims to boost local agricultural productivity and support sustainable livelihoods.

Additionally, the mayor highlighted the district's efforts in helping two individuals start a restaurant in the Richard Bay casino. This new establishment has not only added to the local culinary scene but also created much-needed jobs in the community.

Budget Constraints and Revenue Challenges

Addressing the financial challenges, Mayor Ntuli acknowledged that the district's budget is lower than the needs of its people, making it difficult to provide optimal service delivery. Despite these constraints, the municipality has managed to close some gaps with the assistance of local businesses, although it cannot satisfy everyone.

The mayor emphasized the district's reliance on revenue from bill payments for water, electricity, and sanitation services. These funds are crucial for maintaining and improving municipal services.

Clean Audit Reports and Financial Management

In a noteworthy achievement, King Cetshwayo District has received clean audit reports for three consecutive financial years. Mayor Ntuli credited this success to sound financial management practices and strong leadership. He also noted that King Cetshwayo District, along with uMhlathuze Municipality and uMlalazi Municipality led by female Mayor QT Xulu, are the only municipalities in the region to achieve this milestone.

Commitment to Debt Repayment

Mayor Ntuli made a significant commitment to address the debt left by previous leaders, which amounts to over R30 million. He assured residents that this debt would be paid off by June next year, marking a new era of financial stability for the district.

Looking Ahead to National Elections

With the national elections just five days away, Mayor Ntuli concluded his address with a message of hope and progress. He urged residents to participate in the elections and make their voices heard, emphasizing the importance of continued community engagement and support for local government initiatives.

The State of the District Address highlighted both the achievements and the challenges faced by King Cetshwayo District Municipality. Mayor Ntuli's commitment to financial responsibility and community support set a positive tone for the future, promising continued growth and development for the district.

Former President Jacob Zuma, whose bid to run in the upcoming elections was disqualified by the Constitutional Court due to his previous conviction and imprisonment.

JOHANNESBURG - The Constitutional Court delivered a significant ruling on Monday, determining that former president Jacob Zuma is ineligible to run in next week's elections due to his prior conviction and imprisonment.

Justice Leona Theron, in her judgement, stated, “This court concludes that Mr. Zuma was convicted of an offence and sentenced to more than 12 months imprisonment for the purposes of Section 47(1e) of the Constitution. Consequently, he is not eligible to be a member of, nor qualified to stand for election to the National Assembly until five years have elapsed since the completion of the sentence.”

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) had earlier disqualified Zuma's candidacy based on his 15-month imprisonment for contempt in 2021. He had been listed as a candidate for the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

After the IEC's decision was overturned by the Electoral Court, the commission appealed urgently to the Constitutional Court. The apex court’s ruling has now firmly barred Zuma from participating in the upcoming elections.

In response to the ruling, President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of respecting the judiciary’s decisions. During an interview on 702’s The Clement Manyathela Show and Eyewitness News’ Tshidi Madia, he remarked, “I’m not concerned about this instigating violence. Former President Jacob Zuma should be the one person who respects the rule of law. In South Africa, the rule of law governs us, and once the Constitutional Court has decided, that is final.”

This landmark decision underscores the Constitutional Court's role in upholding the integrity of South Africa’s legal and electoral systems.

Johannesburg, May 19, 2024– The RISE Mzansi People’s Rally, held at Ruimsig Stadium in Roodepoort, Johannesburg, witnessed a powerful address by National Leader Songezo Zibi. In front of an enthusiastic crowd of over 5,000 volunteers, supporters, organizers, and leaders, Zibi laid out a bold vision for South Africa’s future, emphasizing the urgent need for new leadership and genuine change.

Zibi’s speech struck a chord with the attendees as he highlighted the dire state of the nation, attributing the current challenges to ineffective and corrupt leadership over the past three decades. He stated, “None of the problems we face today are the consequence of a natural disaster. They are the result of leaders who are not fit to govern, not fit to lead, not fit to unite South Africans, to inspire us in our darkest hour.”

 A Vision for the Future

Zibi outlined RISE Mzansi’s ambitious plan to tackle unemployment by training tens of thousands of young people and creating living wage jobs through investments in local and regional infrastructure. He also pledged to install solar panels on the roofs of every home in South Africa, promoting sustainable energy and job creation simultaneously.

Addressing the critical need for unity and ethical governance, Zibi said, “We need new leaders who will work to bring all South Africans together, instead of driving us further apart. We have been divided for too long in this country and the cost of divisive politics has done great damage to the progress we could have made.”

Commitment to Accountability and Transparency

One of the rallying cries of Zibi’s speech was the call for a “People’s Parliament.” He announced RISE Mzansi’s commitment to advocating for a Constitutional Amendment to ensure that at least 50% of elected representatives are directly elected by and accountable to their constituencies. He also proposed the implementation of Citizens' Assemblies, composed of ordinary South Africans, to provide recommendations to parliament.

Zibi’s pledge to the voters was clear and resolute: “When we get to parliament, we will work tirelessly to make sure that government is held accountable for every penny of your money that they spend. And we will be accountable to you, the voters, the citizens of South Africa.”

 Pledge of Integrity and Service

Zibi and every RISE Mzansi candidate have committed to a pledge symbolized by the ABCS: Accessible, Brave, Busy, Co-operative, Consultative, and Clean. Each candidate promises to be accessible to their constituents, brave in confronting power, busy in their efforts to improve governance, co-operative with colleagues and communities, consultative with the public, and clean from corruption.

“I will be Accessible. You will always be able to find me. There will be no blue lights between you and me. Just an open door,” Zibi declared, underscoring his commitment to transparency and public service.

 A Call to Action

Zibi concluded his speech with a heartfelt call to action, urging South Africans to vote for RISE Mzansi on May 29. “We are your RISE Mzansi candidates. We are of the people, by the people, for the people. We are standing for election to earn back this trust. IRISE. We RISE. Together, we RISE!” he proclaimed, to rapturous applause from the crowd.

The rally showcased RISE Mzansi’s commitment to bringing about meaningful change through ethical leadership and community engagement. With the upcoming elections, RISE Mzansi positions itself as a formidable force for renewal in South African politics.

Exploitation of Water Resources by Criminal Groups in KwaZulu-Natal Sparks Outcry

In a stark revelation that has sent shockwaves across KwaZulu-Natal, RISE Mzansi KwaZulu-Natal has raised alarm bells over the alarming exploitation of the region's water resources by criminal entities commonly known as "water tanker mafias." This revelation comes amid a deepening water and sanitation crisis in the province, leaving residents in dire straits.

The coalition, in collaboration with concerned residents, has identified a disturbing trend where criminal syndicates capitalize on the water crisis to profit illicitly from water distribution. These groups, referred to as "water tanker mafias," have been clandestinely diverting water resources, exacerbating the already severe challenges faced by communities.

The severity of the situation has prompted RISE Mzansi KwaZulu-Natal to issue an urgent plea to the South African Police Service (SAPS) to intervene decisively. They are calling for the deployment of a specialized team to investigate and dismantle these criminal networks responsible for the illegal distribution and profiteering from water resources.

Highlighting the urgency of the matter, recent reports by News24 have underscored the government's struggle to maintain adequate water and sanitation infrastructure in the province. This has created fertile ground for criminal elements to thrive, further deepening the crisis.

The Chairperson of Parliament's Water and Sanitation Portfolio Committee, Robert Mashego, has shed light on the deliberate sabotage of municipal water supply by these criminal syndicates to bolster their own businesses. The ramifications of these actions are dire, as they directly impact the well-being of communities already grappling with inadequate water and sanitation services.

While KwaZulu-Natal remains a hotspot for this issue, similar challenges persist in other provinces such as Gauteng and Mpumalanga. The surge in demand for water tanker providers during water scarcity periods has created an environment ripe for exploitation by criminal elements, leading to widespread concerns among residents.

In response to the escalating crisis, RISE Mzansi KwaZulu-Natal recently mobilized 400 community members in a mass demonstration demanding access to quality water and sanitation services. This display of community solidarity underscores the urgent need for action to address the crisis and curb the activities of organized criminal groups.

RISE Mzansi KwaZulu-Natal urges the Provincial Commissioner and SAPS to take swift and resolute measures to combat this criminality and safeguard the rights of citizens. By prioritizing this issue and deploying resources effectively, the province can work towards ensuring equitable access to water and sanitation services while upholding principles of justice and fairness.

The water crisis in KwaZulu-Natal is not just a matter of infrastructure; it's a battle against exploitation and criminal profiteering that threatens the fundamental rights of communities. The call for action is urgent, and the resolve to confront these challenges must be unwavering to protect the well-being of all citizens.

Former President Thabo Mbeki recently shared his thoughts on the upcoming elections and the need for everyone to come together to tackle South Africa's problems. He believes that no single political party, not even the ANC, has all the solutions, emphasizing the importance of unity and dialogue after the May 29 polls.

Mbeki's concerns stem from the possibility that the ANC might not win enough votes to lead comfortably. This could lead to discussions with other parties, similar to what happened during Codesa, a crucial meeting that paved the way for South Africa's transition from apartheid to democracy.

During his visits to communities in KwaZulu-Natal, Mbeki noticed widespread dissatisfaction with the ANC's performance. Contrary to popular belief, he noted that people were not voting based solely on tribal lines but rather because they felt let down by unfulfilled promises.

Mbeki stressed the need for the ANC to appoint capable leaders and deliver on their commitments outlined in their plans. He believes that by working together and holding leaders accountable, South Africa can progress towards a better future for all its citizens.

The former president's message resonates beyond politics, urging communities to engage in constructive conversations and take action to address the country's challenges collectively. Mbeki's call for unity and dialogue serves as a rallying cry for South Africans to work together towards a brighter and more prosperous nation.

The Constitutional Court's recent ruling has sent shockwaves through the political landscape as it excludes the African Congress for Transformation (ACT), the Labour Party, and the Afrikan Alliance of Social Democrats from the upcoming May 29 election ballot. These parties failed to meet the submission deadlines for their candidacy lists, resulting in their removal from the electoral race.

Led by Ace Magashule, the ACT had sought inclusion but faced rejection due to procedural delays. Similarly, the Labour Party and the Afrikan Alliance were unable to navigate the submission timeline, leading to their exclusion from the ballot.

This development highlights the rigorous standards and adherence to electoral procedures required for political participation, signaling a pivotal moment in the lead-up to the upcoming election.

RISE Mzansi, led by Premier Candidate Nonkululeko Hlongwane-Mhlongo, today marched to the Office of the Mayor of eThekwini Mxolisi Kaunda to demand essential improvements in water access and sanitation across KwaZulu-Natal.

In a recent statement, Hlongwane-Mhlongo emphasized the critical need for clean water in communities, stating that "water is life." She highlighted the plight in iNanda, where residents have endured prolonged periods without water, and even when water tanks arrive, they are irregular or prioritize those who bribe for access.

These challenges reflect broader issues facing many households in KZN, as highlighted by the 2022 Census, which revealed that only 51.8% of households have piped water inside their dwellings, well below the national standard.

RISE Mzansi demands include:

- Ensuring every household has sufficient water for drinking, cleaning, and cooking.

- Implementing safe sanitation systems for all residents.

- Strengthening the water sector to provide quality service and job opportunities.

- Addressing the effects of the climate crisis, including floods and food insecurity.

The organization also calls for comprehensive reforms in water management and governance, emphasizing community involvement and sustainable practices.

ActionSA Uncovers Dire Water Crisis in Ugu and eThekwini Municipalities

Mzwandile Mhlongo

09 May 2024

ActionSA's legal team, under the leadership of premier candidate Zwakele Mncwango, has revealed alarming negligence in water provision within Ugu District Municipality and eThekwini Metro Municipality.

During extensive oversight visits, it became evident that critical infrastructure like sewer pump stations, water treatment plants, and reservoirs are in a state of disrepair. Raw sewage is flowing openly, posing significant health risks. Municipal officials obstructed access to essential sites, impeding thorough investigations into these pressing issues.

Residents living near reservoirs have faced prolonged water shortages dating back to the early 2000s. Despite substantial allocations for infrastructure repairs, the eThekwini Metro continues to lose a significant percentage of water due to leaks and poor infrastructure maintenance.

In response, ActionSA is petitioning the court to grant access to independent water experts. These experts will conduct comprehensive assessments of critical infrastructure and provide detailed reports outlining urgent interventions required. Additionally, ongoing litigation against eThekwini Metro underscores concerns regarding fund allocation and utilization.

ActionSA urges all stakeholders to demand immediate solutions to the water crisis, stressing the importance of accountability and transparency in addressing these long-standing challenges.

Sindi Maphumulo Mashinini, the Premier Candidate for KwaZulu-Natal under the AM4C party, is making waves with her campaign emphasizing Ubuntu and a vision for change. Formerly a member of the NFP, Mashinini brings a wealth of experience and a strong message to the forefront of South African politics.

In a recent press conference held in Durban, Mashinini highlighted the core values of AM4C, particularly focusing on Ubuntu and its integration into the party's policies. She expressed concern about the state of democracy in South Africa, citing a rise in hunger and dissatisfaction with current laws. One of the key points she raised was the public's demand for the reinstatement of the death penalty, reflecting widespread discontent with the current justice system.

Mashinini also critiqued the leadership within government departments, advocating for leaders who possess firsthand knowledge and experience in their respective fields. Using the Department of Health as an example, she argued that leaders should have a deep understanding of health systems to effectively drive positive change.

Education was another crucial topic in Mashinini's address. She criticized the minimum pass rate of 30%, stating that it leads to discrepancies where students may pass but fail to secure spots in universities. Her proposal suggests aligning the minimum pass rate with university entry requirements, ensuring that students meet the necessary academic standards for higher education.

In addition to her political agenda, Mashinini outlined AM4C's initiatives for skills development. She mentioned a school established by the party to teach youth essential skills and pledged to provide women with training in areas such as sewing and agriculture, empowering them for economic independence.

The AM4C party is contesting elections in three provinces - KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and the Western Cape - as well as nationally. Mashinini's vision for change and commitment to addressing pressing issues resonate with many voters, and she promises that if elected to parliament, AM4C will prioritize policies that benefit the people of KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.

Premier Candidate Zwakele Mncwango of ActionSA has demonstrated his commitment to supporting and uplifting the educational community by donating food parcels to students at the uMfolozi TVET, Esikhawini Campus. This act of generosity comes in response to a group of students who reached out to Mncwango seeking assistance due to their challenges with food security.

The students, facing uncertainty about their next meal and in need of essential food supplies, found a helping hand in Premier Candidate Zwakele Mncwango. Their outreach highlighted the profound challenges many students encounter regarding food security, emphasizing the critical role political figures can play in addressing pressing issues within their communities.

Mncwango, speaking at the donation event, expressed that ActionSA does not discriminate based on political affiliations when extending help. "We don't look at which political party a person comes from; ActionSA helps everyone," he stated. He further empathized with the students, sharing his own experience of struggling as a student without access to sufficient food. "I know the struggle of sleeping without food; I was also a student, and I was suffering," Mncwango remarked.

Emphasizing the power of education in shaping a better future, Mncwango encouraged students to take charge of their destinies. "The future is in your hands; you can change this situation through education," he said, inspiring hope and determination among the student community.

Addressing the diverse backgrounds of the students receiving aid, Mncwango highlighted that ActionSA's support extends to all, regardless of their political affiliations. "The students we help with food parcels may be members of the EFF, but we don't look at that. We help them because they are the future of the country," Mncwango affirmed, underlining the importance of unity and solidarity in building a brighter tomorrow.

The donation of food parcels to uMfolozi TVET students by Premier Candidate Zwakele Mncwango reflects a proactive approach towards addressing the immediate needs of students and advocating for a more supportive educational environment.
